Type on your usual keys: each one types its Inscript letter, and Shift types the second letter on the key. Press Space after each word. A word with a mistake turns red; Backspace fixes it while you are still in it.

No download, no account: it runs in your browser, Chromebooks included.

How this test counts

The test counts 5 key depressions as one word, the usual measure of typing speed, so 30 words a minute is 150 key depressions a minute. Each letter, vowel sign, tippi, bindi, addak, halant (੍) and space is one key depression, as Inscript types each with one key; Shift is not counted. PSSSB's advertisement does not say how its test counts mistakes, so this page sets your net speed, the words typed right, beside the 30: the stricter reading. Read it as practice, not as an exam result.

Net speed counts only the words you typed exactly right, with the space after each. Gross speed counts everything you typed. A word is checked when you press Space after it, so a word you are still typing when the time ends does not count. A word you leave out or add counts as one mistake, and the words after it still count.

Typing Punjabi on an English keyboard

Inscript puts the vowels under the left hand and the consonants under the right, in the same places as for Hindi. The home row has ੋ ੇ ੍ ਿ ੁ on the left and ਪ ਰ ਕ ਤ ਚ ਟ on the right. Shift gives the second letter on a key: the full vowel instead of its sign (ਾ becomes ਆ) and the aspirated consonant (ਕ becomes ਖ).

Punjabi's own signs have keys too: X types tippi (ੰ) and Shift + X bindi (ਂ), and addak (ੱ), which doubles the next consonant, is Shift + 4. ੜ is Shift + J, ਸ਼ is Shift + M and ਲ਼ is Shift + N; for ਖ਼, ਗ਼, ਜ਼ and ਫ਼, type the letter, then the dot ਼ (the ] key). A letter written at the foot of another, such as the ਰ of ਪ੍ਰ or the ਹ of ਪੜ੍ਹ, is the halant ੍ (the D key) and that letter; Shift + 3 types ੍ਰ in one press. Punjabi ends a sentence with a danda (।), Shift + full stop.

To type Inscript everywhere, add Punjabi (India, in Gurmukhi) in Windows: Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Add a language. Its keyboard, Punjabi, has the same keys as this page. Hold the Windows key and press Space to switch between your keyboards.

Punjabi typing for government jobs

The Punjab Subordinate Services Selection Board (PSSSB) recruits clerks for Punjab government departments. Its advertisement 12 of 2026 (published 18 September 2026) asks candidates for its clerk posts (legal, accounts and IT) to pass a test in Punjabi and English typing at 30 words a minute. The test is typed on a computer, the Punjabi part in the Unicode font Raavi, and it only qualifies: the merit list comes from the written exam.

The passages here are Unicode Gurmukhi, the text that Windows' Punjabi keyboard and phone keyboards type and Raavi shows. Older fonts such as Asees and AnmolLipi draw Gurmukhi letters over English letter codes, so text typed for them does not match. The advertisement gives no length for the test: the page opens on 10 minutes, and you can pick 1 to 15.

For the English part, take the typing test; for Hindi, the Hindi typing test; to learn which finger presses each key, start the typing lessons; and for the speeds other government jobs ask for, see typing speed for jobs.
