Type on your usual keys: each one types its Inscript letter, and Shift types the second letter on the key. Press Space after each word. A word with a mistake turns red; Backspace fixes it while you are still in it.

No download, no account: it runs in your browser, Chromebooks included.

How this test counts

The test counts 5 key depressions as one word, the usual measure of typing speed. Each letter, vowel sign, anusvara (ಂ), virama (್) and space is one key depression, as Inscript types each with one key; Shift is not counted. Exams mark in their own way, so read your speed here as practice, not as an exam result.

Net speed counts only the words you typed exactly right, with the space after each. Gross speed counts everything you typed. A word is checked when you press Space after it, so a word you are still typing when the time ends does not count. A word you leave out or add counts as one mistake, and the words after it still count.

Typing Kannada on an English keyboard

Inscript puts the vowels under the left hand and the consonants under the right, in the same places as for Hindi. The home row has ೋ ೇ ್ ಿ ು on the left and ಪ ರ ಕ ತ ಚ ಟ on the right. Shift gives the second letter on a key: the full vowel instead of its sign (ಾ becomes ಆ) and the aspirated consonant (ಕ becomes ಖ).

Some letters sit under Shift: ಳ is Shift + N, ಣ is Shift + C, ಶ is Shift + M and ಷ is Shift + comma. The short vowel signs have keys of their own: ೆ is Z and ೊ is the ` key, left of 1. To join two consonants, type the first, then the virama ್ (the D key), then the second: ಸ, ್, ತ gives ಸ್ತ. Shift + 7 types ಕ್ಷ and Shift + 5 types ಜ್ಞ. Kannada ends a sentence with a full stop, as the passages here do.

To type Inscript everywhere, add Kannada in Windows: Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Add a language. Its keyboard, Kannada, has the same keys as this page. Hold the Windows key and press Space to switch between your keyboards.

Kannada typing for government jobs

The Kodagu district court's recruitment notice of 28 August 2026, for eight typist posts, asks for a pass in the Senior Grade Typewriting examination in Kannada and English, or a Diploma in Secretarial Practice, and computer skills. By order of the High Court of Karnataka, its Kannada and English typing tests are taken on a computer. Candidates are chosen on their percentage in the qualifying examination (2nd PUC or equivalent), a typing skill test in which they type on a computer what is dictated to them over 15 minutes, marked out of 100 with 50 needed to pass, and an interview worth 5 marks.

That test uses the Kannada keyboard of the Kuvempu-Surabhi software, drawn on the last page of the notice, and its keys are not Inscript's: if that is your test, learn its keys from the drawing. The passages here are Unicode Kannada, the text that Windows' Kannada keyboard, Nudi in Unicode and phone keyboards type, and the page opens on the skill test's 15 minutes. In the court's test the passage is dictated, not shown: once the keys come easily, practise with someone reading a passage aloud to you. Other employers set their own tests, so check the notice for your post.

For English, take the typing test; to learn which finger presses each key, start the typing lessons; and for the speeds other government jobs ask for, see typing speed for jobs.
