Marathi typing test
Type a Marathi passage in Unicode and set your speed beside the 30 words a minute that Maharashtra asks of its clerk-typists. No Marathi keyboard? Type on your usual keys: this page turns each one into its Inscript letter.
Type on your usual keys: each one types its Inscript letter, and Shift types the second letter on the key. Press Space after each word. A word with a mistake turns red; Backspace fixes it while you are still in it.

How this test counts
The test counts 5 key depressions as one word, the usual measure of typing speed, so 30 words a minute is 150 key depressions a minute. Each letter, vowel sign, virama (्) and space is one key depression, as Inscript types each with one key; Shift is not counted. MSCE marks its certificate exams by its own rules, so read your speed here as practice, not as an exam result.
Net speed counts only the words you typed exactly right, with the space after each. Gross speed counts everything you typed. A word is checked when you press Space after it, so a word you are still typing when the time ends does not count. A word you leave out or add counts as one mistake, and the words after it still count.
Typing Marathi on an English keyboard
Inscript puts the vowels under the left hand and the consonants under the right. The home row has ो े ् ि ु on the left and प र क त च ट on the right. Shift gives the second letter on a key: the full vowel instead of its sign (ा becomes आ) and the aspirated consonant (क becomes ख).
Some letters Marathi uses often sit under Shift: ळ is Shift + N, ण is Shift + C and ऱ is Shift + J, followed by ् for the ऱ्या of करणाऱ्या. To join two consonants, type the first, then the virama ् (the D key), then the second: क, ्, ष gives क्ष. Marathi ends a sentence with a full stop, as the passages here do.
To type Inscript everywhere, add Marathi in Windows: Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Add a language. Its keyboard, Marathi, has the same keys as this page, and its number row types Marathi digits (१, २, ३). Hold the Windows key and press Space to switch between your keyboards.
Marathi typing for government jobs
Maharashtra's recruitment rules for clerk-typists in government offices in Brihan Mumbai (Government Gazette, 21 February 2018) ask for the Government Commercial Certificate or a Computer Typing Certificate at not less than 30 words a minute in Marathi typewriting, or 40 in English. The Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE) in Pune, which awards the certificate, holds GCC-TBC typing exams in Marathi at 30 and 40 words a minute.
The passages here are Unicode Marathi, the text that Windows' Marathi keyboard and phone keyboards type. Older fonts such as Kruti Dev draw Marathi letters over English letter codes, so text typed for them does not match. In MSCE's notice for June 2026, the speed passage (गती उतारा) of its 30 words-a-minute exams lasts 7 minutes, or 10 for blind candidates and those with a permanent disability of 40% or more, so this page opens on 7.
For English, take the typing test; for Hindi, the Hindi typing test; to learn which finger presses each key, start the typing lessons; and for the speeds other government jobs ask for, see typing speed for jobs.
